The Occultist knows the Warrens are onto her, so she targets Ed and possesses him to try and kill Lorraine. Not only is it in a creepy morgue, but the connection works both ways. When Lorraine touched David's hand during the exorcism, she briefly saw The Occultist, so she wants to touch Jessica's hand to find out where The Occultist is. Lorraine 'sees' Katie's murder in the nearby forest and watches as Jessica stabs Katie, before jumping to her death off a cliff. Detectives found a Witch's Totem at the home of Katie's friend Jessica Louise Strong, who is still missing. He tells them that the 'why is irrelevant' in terms of David's curse as the only aim of the person, The Occultist, who left the Witch's Totem is 'chaos'.Īs Arne continues to be tormented by The Occultist in jail, the Warrens travel to Danvers, Massachusetts to investigate the death of Katie Lincoln who was stabbed 22 times like Arne's landlord was. The Warrens visit Kastner who previously dealt with the Disciples of the Ram cult, a nod to the Annabelle series. It's used by satanists in their rituals and cursed David, with the curse passing onto Arne and as soon as he killed someone, the demon left him. They discover a Witch's Totem under the waterbed in the Glatzels' house that David used on the first day they moved there. However, it's here where the movie diverges from the reported events as the Warrens investigate the original possession of David Glatzel. The Warrens promise to help Arne's case and persuade his solicitor to use the demonic possession defence as they did in real life. It's too late to stop him fatally stabbing his landlord Bruno (renamed from the real-life victim, Alan Bono).

However, it soon becomes clear not all is well with Arne and when Ed wakes up, he tells Lorraine that the demon has 'got Arne' and she warns the police something bad will happen. Ed also suffers a heart attack during the exorcism and while he recovers in hospital, Arne and the rest of the Glatzel family go about their business as usual.

In a shift to the real-life timeline, the movie opens on Jwith the exorcism of David Glatzel, attended by the Warrens and Arne Johnson who is the boyfriend of David's sister Debbie.ĭuring the intense exorcism, Arne offers the demon inside the child to 'take me' and we see it pass into him.
